Come on Over review
Olivia Newton-John, the demure Miss Downtrodden, has a few surprises for her fans on “Come on Over”.
The album opens with “Jolene”, a typical country being-done-wrong-by piece, but with an untypical country - and Olivia - beef and beat with this airing.
“I’ll Be There” (Ed - I think they mean It’ll Be Me) comes out more soul-rock than anything; Olivia stretches out for the high notes in a way we haven’t heard before on “Come On Over” and even plays around with “Greensleeves”.
It’s not until “Who Are You Now” - side 2, track 2 - that you get the type-cast Olivia. It happens to be one of her best numbers, though. Full marks, Olivia.
